Pie Allen Neighborhood (Tucson, Arizona)

The Pie Allen Neighborhood in Tucson is named for John Brackett “Pie” Allen (1818-1899), an American prospector, businessman, and politician. He earned his nickname baking and selling dried-apple pies to settlers and soldiers in the Arizona Territory. His business success made him a prominent territorial citizen and he served three terms in the Arizona Territorial Legislature, two terms as Mayor of Tucson, Arizona Territory, and was appointed Arizona Territorial Treasurer for six years. This historic 23-block area has gone through many transformations in the last 120 years, with a revival in the 1970’s and is now a popular housing area for students and young professionals due to its proximity to the Fourth Avenue Shopping District and the nearby University of Arizona campus. Dan and I first discovered the 4th Avenue stretch of this eclectic neighborhood during the 4th Avenue Spring Street Fair in early April, and returned the next week to take our time exploring the shops and enjoying the murals, store fronts, graffiti, and building art. Here are some pictures of the Pie Allen District, named a National Register Historic District in 1996.
