The original team was called the
Cincinnati Red Stockings, founded in 1866, and was baseball’s first fully
professional team. There has been a litany of name changes, city changes, star
players, and championships since then, way too much to document here, but easy
enough to search out on the internet for those who are interested. I thought it
would more fun to highlight a couple of the “fun facts” about the team instead!
- The highest recorded attendance in a season was 2,629,708 in 1976, which happened to be the year they won their second consecutive World Series title.
- The Cincinnati Reds were expelled from the National League in 1880 for continuing to rent out the ballpark on Sundays and not ceasing to sell beer during games.
- There are some hardcore Reds fans that believe Opening Day should be named a Cincinnati holiday. For decades, the first pitch of every major league season officially took place in Cincinnati, and the Reds remain the only major league team to always open the season with a home game.
Attendance during the game we
attended was 16,001 (capacity is 42,319), and despite “root, root, rooting” for
the Home Team, Texas won, 6-5.
Hi Becky! Looks like you two are doing well and having fun. Love the picture of both your pairs of shoes on the railing.
ReplyDeleteRecently my husband and I purchased a book for stamps from all 50 state capitols (same idea as the Nat'l Parks Passport stamp), since it is also our goal to visit all 50. We already have 3 stamps, but are a little bummed since we've visited others before we purchased the book. What is it that inspires us to visit *all* of whatever category? Whatever it is I'm grateful, since we've seen some absolutely gorgeous state capitols already and are looking forward to the rest.
Hi Danielle! Nice to hear from you, thanks for stopping by! :) We have had a very busy summer, lots of touring in the mid-west, and I'm a bit behind on the blog - but I'll get it all out there eventually.
ReplyDeleteI know what you're saying about this need to visit *all* of whatever category, haha! It can become a compulsion, that's for sure. But you make a very good point - without this to urge us on, we would have missed out on so many beautiful places, capitols and otherwise. I've seen the 50 state capitols book, and unfortunately, it was *after* we'd been to them all. Ah well... There is also a book for Presidential Libraries (which we do have, and are about halfway through). And of course, the National Parks Passport book which we are continuing to work through.
Which state capitols have you been to? Which is your favorite so far?
We've been to California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Oklahoma and Utah so far. Some of those we'll have to revisit to get the stamps! Of the six we've seen I like the Idaho capitol building the best; its beautiful exterior and grounds are very impressive.
ReplyDeleteWe had made it a goal a few years ago to visit them all, but now that we have the book we're doubly committed. :)
You're off to a great start!
DeleteKeep in touch, and let us know how things unwind down the road!! :)
