Wynwood Walls

For anyone who appreciates city murals, who can see beauty in graffiti, and value in street art, Wynwood Walls is just the place to be. The Wynwood Walls project was launched in 2009 by renowned community revitalizer Tony Goldman who was looking for something big to transform the warehouse district of this neighborhood. The large stock of windowless warehouse buildings were the perfect giant canvases to bring all the best street art ever to one place. What began with six separate buildings spanning 25th-26th street, his goal was to create a center where people could gravitate to and explore, and to develop the area’s pedestrian potential.

Building on the momentum of the first year, additional streets, walls, and buildings were opened up and international artists were invited to help expand the collection. Since its inception the Wynwood Walls program has seen over 50 artists representing 16 countries and have covered over 80,000 square feet of walls. The walls have become a very popular tourist destination, with media coverage from the New York Times, BBC News, Vanity Fair, and Forbes, who listed this as one of America’s hippest neighborhoods. Artists from the United States, Brazil, Belgium, Mexico, Portugal, Ukraine, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Germany, France, England, Japan and Singapore, are among the celebrated artists who have contributed to the project.

The diverse range of styles, colors, and genres was incredible, and walking through these streets was like finding a new treasure at every turn. From formal portrait style paintings, to old school street graffiti, to cartoon characters and super heroes, to depictions of real life heroes, the gamut covers an amazing array of outdoor city art. Although we spent all morning walking through neighborhood, it felt like we barely scratched the surface of the miles of murals found here.

Here is just a portion of the dozens of pictures we took during our visit.
