Before leaving Miami at the end of April
(2019), we took a two-day trip to Key West. Lying roughly 90 miles north of
Cuba, Key West is Florida’s southernmost point, and is the southernmost city in
the contiguous United States. It is also the westernmost island connected by
highway in the Florida Keys. This tiny, but famous key is only 4 miles long and
1 one mile wide, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side connected by Duval Street
to the Straits of Florida and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. For such a compact
island, there is a lot going on. From Hemingway’s home, to Harry S. Truman’s
winter White House, to the party atmosphere of Duval Street, to snorkeling and
kayaking, from wildlife spotting to parasailing, Key West is a vibrant, yet laid back island very popular with tourists. There is an abundance of beach
themed bars and restaurants, funky street art, and ample shopping opportunities;
you can walk or ride your bike to just about everywhere, and the vibe is
friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed watching the sun rise out of the ocean from
the balcony of our hotel room, long walks on the beach, and a day-long bike ride
and exploration of the island. Here are some pictures of our visit.
In 2007 Dan and I retired from work, hitched our 5th wheel to our truck, and hit the road. We are full time RV'ers so we take our home with us everywhere we go. We live by the credo "Home Is Where You Park It" and we have found Home in many an awesome setting! I created this blog to track our adventures as we travel around the US, Canada, and Mexico. Two of our goals include visiting all the State Capitals and as many of the Baseball Parks as possible, with everything else we can fit in between!
